Re-creating the Cape Fear Crime Festival By Joyce Lavene

What's it like behind the scenes of two mystery writers re-creating a writer's conference with no prior experience?

Chaos - at times.

Judy Nichols (the greatest!) and I have been working on bringing the Late-Great Cape Fear Crime Festival back to life. It's a little like Frankenstein's monster rising from the slab. A lot of creaking and groaning - some electric sparks.

All in all, a good experience. Most writers have been easy to work with. There are a lot of questions you thought you already answered a few times.

The New Hanover County Library (who first created the conference) has been great about sharing everything from Gun Guy (the logo) to banners. They have given us space for the conference and not nagged us to make it just like the other CFCFs - which is good because that would have been impossible.

But it's all been for a good cause. What other mystery writer's conference has such a great name and an awesome location? Cape Fear was meant to be a mystery writer's hangout.

For those of you who won't be there, we'll miss you!

  2. So looking forward to it, Joyce. Thanks to you, Jim, and Judy for all the hard work and to the library and Two Sisters for making it easier.
