HAUNTS AND EATS - Thomasville, NC
In November 0f 1982, something amazing happened. The small town of Thomasville, known for its furniture business and barbecue, became a worldwide center of phenomena. The ghost at San Mor Company was reported in the Montreal Gazette, The Miami News, The London Post and the Windser Star.
Now maybe it was just a slow news time but I think it's more likely that people were faced with real paranormal phenomena and wanted to know all they could.
The ghost at 20 Peace Street, where the San Mor Furniture Comany was, had been there for a long time prior to that date. The workers there called him Lucifer, Lucas for short. Most of them had seen him or at least seen the results of his work at one time or another. He had a bad habit of knocking things over and appearing at odd times during the night shift.
The ghost was reported as being about six feet tall with a blurred face but most people thought he was an older man. He wore a checked shirt and khaki pants. He never spoke to anyone - just watched them - which was unnerving enough.
The event that made the newspapers pick up on the story was that night shift workers quit their jobs because they were too scared to work there anymore. There were tired of large objects falling when no one was there, tools being moved and stacks of lumber shifted around.
Owner Victor Couch joked about it. "He's the best watchdog we ever had." But he'd seen the ghost too. It had been going on for almost the entire 10 years the company had been in the building. Then it got worse.
Production slipped on the night shift because people were afraid to work there. When workers quit, he couldn't rehire to replace them - at least not on the night shift.
Finally, Couch did away with the nightshift. He couldn't fight the workers' terror of confronting Lucas as they worked.
Is Lucas still roaming the area at night without workers to frighten with his antics? We'll probably never know. But it was one of those rare times when a ghost became news.
Eating in Thomasville:
We recommend Tommy's Barbecue. Everyone eats Lexington-style barbecue when in this area of the state. It's the wet kind with sauce as opposed to the dry kind found further down in the Piedmont. Tommy's is a local favorite - just right for someplace to go after hunting ghosts!
