How do you decide what's funny?
A woman in an audience at a bookstore asked me this last week.
She said, "Your books are SO funny. But how do you decide when you're writing it that it IS funny?"
Tough question!
I can tell something is funny if I laugh when I'm writing it. Most of the time it isn't planned - it just happens. Those are the best.
Sometimes when we're plotting a story, we think of it then and plot it right in. We can tell it's funny because we're saying,"Oh yeah! And then-"
Otherwise, I'm not sure how you can tell it's funny. A little tickle in the back of your throat when you think about what just happened. Or maybe when one of us laughs out loud.
Of course what we think is funny isn't always the same for everyone who reads it. We've had people tell us our books weren't funny because killing people has to be serious.
We always just think they have a strange sense of humor!
Jim and I will be at the Sisters in Crime meeting in Charlotte on Saturday, August 20 at 11 am, Harbor Inn, University.
